Parks By Month guide

Best National Parks to Visit in May

May is one of the most flexible months on the calendar. Spring scenery is still strong, many shoulder-season trips still feel easy, and several big-name parks work well before the full summer rush settles in.

It is especially good for spring mountain scenery in the East and shoulder-season trips in the Southwest. It is much less appealing in the hottest desert spots.

Best places to go in May

Great Smoky Mountains

May is a very easy month to like in the Smokies. You still get spring scenery, but the trip usually feels a little more settled than it does in April.

It is not empty, but it is calmer than October.

Shenandoah

May is a great fit for green scenery, easy scenic drives, and mountain weather that usually feels friendlier than summer.

It is less dramatic than October, but often easier.

Capitol Reef

Capitol Reef is a smart May Utah trip if you want great weather without the same constant pressure as Zion or Arches.

It can warm up quickly by late month.

Acadia

May is an underrated way into Acadia season. The trip starts feeling much more workable by then.

It does not yet feel fully summer-like.

Zion

May is strong in Zion if you want long days and very good hiking weather before summer gets rough.

It can feel busier and more logistically annoying than April.

Trips to think twice about

Death Valley

Already moving out of its best window.

Glacier

Still too early for the broad classic trip in many years.

Rocky Mountain

Improving, but still more variable than summer.

Who this month works best for

Best for spring greenery, family trips before school-break crowds, and travelers who want a broad set of good options.
